wendy’s underwater maternity session
mayan riviera, mexico

What a difference a year makes!  Exactly one year after Wendy and Shane were married in Tulum, Mexico, we found ourselves back in the exact same spot, celebrating something very different, but no less exciting:  the upcoming birth of baby Cache (who is now 3 weeks old).  The inspiration for this shoot started with a dream – literally.  Almost a year ago now, (before Wendy was even pregnant) I woke up in the middle of the night with thoughts of an underwater maternity shoot in my head.  I had made underwater photographs during Wendy and Shane’s day-after session not long before, and I guess my subconscious was still processing that shoot, cooking up new possibilities.  I decided to play along, and the next day, my email message to Wendy went in part like this:  “You are going to think I am absolutely looney-tunes, but I woke up in the middle of the night last night and I don’t know if I was dreaming or what, but I thought: I want to do an underwater maternity shoot!….  I imagined you in a flowing brightly coloured dress (orange or pink, or bright green), in clear blue water…oooh so pretty”.  Sooo – despite the fact that Wendy lives in Northern Manitoba, that she wasn’t even pregnant yet at the time of my dream, and that I had never done an underwater maternity shoot before, the idea stuck, serendipity played her part, and ~voila~ we have the following images – complete with a bright pink flowing dress, clear blue water, and once again lots of fish.

The first part of Wendy’s session began early in the morning on the beach.  There was an old broken down pier that I thought would be a perfect place for some dramatic images with the sun rising behind her.  She attracted quite a bit of attention from passers-by while standing half-nude on the post.  One nice lady who was walking by acted as my impromptu assistant – even wading into the water to pick up the fabric, soaking her running shoes in the process (thanks Sue!).  And THEN, as I was photographing Wendy, I heard the footsteps of a jogger behind me , and then a gasp as she said “Wowowww – you look like a Goddess!”, followed by “thump thump THUMP” as she tripped on a post and tumbled to the ground.  Thankfully, after a few stunned minutes assessing the damage, she was okay (just a small-ish gash on her head),  but she was SO right – Wendy does look like a Goddess, don’t you think?

The early morning shoot was a bit too much for Shane, but here is one of the two of them a little later in the day, just before they made the jump into the cenote.

  • Amy, wait until you see what an underwater goddess you were! Can’t wait to share your images. *soon*

  • I don’t need underwater photos. OR DO I!? If I did I know who I’d call.

Do you have a house in Mexico yet? It seems like you should, a house beside a lagoon would be nice.
